Come funzionano i verbi causativi?
Our boss makes us wear ties.
I quattro principali verbi causativi
I quattro principali verbi causativi sono make, let, have, e get, e hanno i seguenti significati:
- Make – obbligare o indurre qualcuno a fare qualcosa
My boss made me work late yesterday.
Onions always make me cry.
- Let – permettere a qualcuno di fare qualcosa
His parents let him stay out until 11pm.
Her manager lets her work from home twice a week.
- Have – fare in modo che qualcuno faccia qualcosa
They had a decorator paint the walls.
- Get – fare in modo che qualcuno faccia qualcosa
I’ll get the plumber to fix the leak.
| VERBO CAUSATIVO | SIGNIFICATO | ESEMPIO |
| Make | Obbligare qualcuno a fare qualcosa Provocare un’azione | I make my son clean his room. The film made us laugh. |
| Let | Permettere a qualcuno di fare qualcosa | They let us take a free sample. |
I’ll have our technician contact you. We should have the system updated. |
We got Anna to plan our wedding. Shall we get a pizza delivered? |
Have / Get something done – significato e struttura
Puoi usare sia ‘have’ sia ‘get’ anche in senso passivo, con il significato di ‘arrange for an action to be done’ (fare in modo che un’azione venga svolta). Per esempio:
I have my hair cut once a month.
They got the car serviced in June.
In questo caso usiamo ‘have’ o ‘get’ più l’oggetto, seguito da un verbo al participio passato.
Have the car washed (have + oggetto + participio passato)
Get your nails done (get + oggetto + participio passato)
Non c’è differenza di significato. Tuttavia, ‘have’ è più formale di ‘get’.
Usare ‘make’ alla forma passiva
In questo caso, però, devi aggiungere ‘to’. Per esempio,
ATTIVA: They made me wait for two hours.
PASSIVA: I was made to wait for two hours.

The policeman made me to show him my driving license. SBAGLIATO
The policeman made me show him my driving license. CORRETTO
Our boss makes us wear jeans.
Our boss lets us wear jeans.
Our boss often makes us work on Saturdays.
